Blessing #14- Christmas Memories

My absolute favorite Christmas memory was a tradition my brother Chad and I had. My brother and I fought constantly, but once a year there was peace on earth as we worked together on our Christmas tradition…opening our presents early.

It started when I was seven. My brother and I really wanted the game Shark Attack, and there was a box under our tree that looked to be the size of Shark Attack. While my mom was getting ready, we opened and quickly tried to play Shark Attack. We had the game rewrapped and put under the tree before she came out of her room. With this first transgression, we were hooked.

Through the following years our tradition continued. One year, our parents gave us the early gift of walkie talkies. We quickly put these to good use for our tradition. My brother placed me at the top of the driveway, walkie talkie in hand, as lookout while he dug through the trash for receipts.

When I was nine, my parents put all of our gifts in the huge trunk of my dad’s Delta 88. Patiently, we waited all the Christmas season for them to slip up. One day they left the keys as they went out in a different car. We ran outside to see what trunkie claus had for us. I squealed with delight as my brother pulled out my brand new bicycle. I took it for a quick spin, and my brother made sure to wipe off the tires before he placed it back in the trunk.

Another year, we used my mom’s checkbook registry to find out all of our gifts. A few years later, my brother and I were delighted when my mom discovered the decorative box. She decided not to wrap our presents but place them in the decorative box. My brother and I could not have been happier because this made our job much easier.

Our tradition continued until one fateful Christmas. My brother was in his first year of college and was very busy. Determined to keep our tradition going, I opened all our gifts, and told him what he got. When Christmas morning came, my dad was videotaping as my brother opened one of his gifts. He held up a shirt and said, “Stephanie, is this the shirt you told me about.” I looked at him like I was going to kill him as my dad cut off the video camera. Dad then proceeded to give us the now famous “You Ruined Christmas” lecture. I believe this lecture was made up of parts of his Christmas sermon that year, the “I only got nuts and coconut candy when I was your age” story, and threats to never buy another gift for us again. After the lecture, dad cut the camera back on, and we faked surprise through the rest of the presents. However, we had done that for years.

One day Brandon and Collin will ask me why I never put presents under the tree until Christmas day, or why I shred all receipts for the month of December. Or why I randomly jump out during December and say, “Aha! I caught you!” I’ll just blame it all on their Uncle Chad.

Give Me Five Friday- {southern Christmas songs}

If you've missed it, here's the short version of Give me Five Friday. I like making lists. Every Friday I'll make a list. The only rule is it has to be five things.

OK, I know I have talked way too much about Christmas music, but I promise this is the last post about it. I noticed a different branch of Christmas music this week., the “Southern Christmas Song.”

Living in Maryland, I have determined to teach my boys about their southern heritage. Collin was born in Delaware so......

Calm down baby. I think we can work out a dual citizenship deal.

Don't be disappointed Delaware is a fantastic state. I have come to really appreciate it!

Anyway, at Christmas I find myself belting out these Southern Christmas favorites and driving my husband crazy.

{five favorite southern Christmas songs}

1. Christmas Times A’Comin’ - I really think the name says it all. What the songs about, and the type of audience it’s for.

2. Santa Claus is Watching You by Ray Stevens- My brother reminded me of this one. I had forgotten all about it. “He’s everywhere! He’s everywhere!”

3. Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer- We all know how I feel about this song.

4. Any Christmas song sung by Dolly Parton "Hard Candy Christmas" or "A Christmas to Remember"

5. Christmas in Dixie- This is the ultimate southern Christmas song. Seriously, this song makes me homesick. I always say Commerce, Georgia where they say Ft. Payne, Alabama.

Do you know of any more I could add to the list?

Curse #5- Winter B

Before I begin let me say that I adore my son, Brandon. I think he is one of the coolest people I have ever met. Yes, he is only four, but I promise you, he is one of the coolest people I have ever met. I absolutely adore him and all his crazy ways.

Now that I have stated the obvious, let me begin. Sometime last week, I saw it. It’s that certain look of craziness in B’s eyes. I started to get suspicious, but I gave it a few more days. Then one day Shad looked at me and said, “What happened to Brandon!” I thought I was just being paranoid, but as soon as I realized someone else noticed it, I knew it was true. Winter B has returned!

Who is Winter B? Winter B is the creature that takes over my sweet little Brandon every winter.

Why does Winter B arrive? Every little boy has a certain amount of destructiveness they have to get out everyday. B has a very large quota of destructiveness to release. This destructiveness is no trouble for our family in the summer. We just send him outside and let him get his destructiveness out on the dirt, grass, and trees instead of our house. Once that destructiveness is gone, my little Brandon is much calmer, more respectful, less mischievous, and all around sweet.

What is Winter B like? Winter B only plays one game with his toys. No matter what the toy, (a car, a stuffed animal, a kid lap top) he still plays the same game, demolition derby. Demolition derby is where he just crashes things together and yells, “Demolition Dervy!” (not a typo. He says dervy.) Winter B has this evil sounding deep laugh that occurs every time he destroys something. Winter B yells out random words as loud as he can. This weeks word is, “English!!!” (I told you it is random.)Winter B chases our poor cat in a full circle through every room of our house several times a day. When you think Winter B is napping, he actually gets into his dresser and puts on four pairs of underwear. (That really happened two weeks ago)

Even though all this is true, Winter B is still my sweet Brandon, he just requires more work on my part. I do love B, even Winter B, but if there’s a Winter Collin too, I am definitely moving us to Florida.

Project Life - November 29 - December 5

Here's this weeks pictures. I love how in many of the pictures you can tell that Christmas is getting near. Again if you want to join in or view other Project Life projects just go to The Mom Creative.

Monday, November 29- no picture

November 30- I just love my guy. I call him little old man. I know it's a strange thing to call him, but I'm sleep deprived. A lot of strange things make sense when you are sleep deprived.

December 1- While I was in the other room, B was working on this. Wow! All the red toys are on the red rug and all the green toys are on the green rug. I don't know whether to be impressed or worried.

December 2- B had his yearly physical. This was him after getting two shots and not crying. The doctor informed us that he was small for his age, but that's just fine. Whatever he lacks in size he makes up for in personality!

December 3- I love this hat. I saw it a Children's Place and it was on sale! I couldn't find his size, so I pulled this one off the display. He hadn't gotten his winter hat yet, and I think this one is perfect. Only one problem though, every time he puts it on, he growls for five minutes.

December 4- We have a family tradition of getting ornaments for the members of our family. This year it has not been easy. We just can't seem to find the right ones. Finally, we were able to find B one at Hallmark, but it was sold out. After going to three different places we found it. All for the tradition!

December 5 - First off, no I STILL did not get a picture of Collin in church. Epic Failure! Anyway, Collin has some difficulty keeping a pacifier in his mouth. He spits it out constantly and then gets mad. So Shad's solution was to put the blanket in fron of the pacifier to hold it in. Do you see those eyes? They are saying, "Wow, these are my parents."

Give Me Five Friday- {Unlikable Christmas Music}

If you've missed it, here's the short version of Give me Five Friday. I like making lists. Every Friday I'll make a list. The only rule is it has to be five things.

Earlier in the week, I shared my love of Christmas music. Yesterday, as we were in the car, "The Little Drummer Boy" came on the radio. I immediately turned it. This action made me write a facebook status about it, and then prompted me to extend it into a Give me Five Friday.

{five Christmas songs I don't like}

1. The Little Drummer Boy- The writer used one too many pa rum pum pum pum's for me. He/she should have taken a note from the writer of Frosty the Snowman. Who does not like thumpety thump thump?

2. The Christmas Shoes- Does this make me the most cold-hearted person ever? I just don't like this song. I've never liked the songs where they tell a whole story like "The Nights the Lights Went Out in Georgia," and "The Devil Went Down to Georgia (although I do love Georgia). The only exception of course is Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer.

3. Santa Baby- Inevitably, this song has to be sung with that voice that the original singer uses, and that's just annoying.

4. The Twelve Days of Christmas- One of my facebook friends pointed this one out, and I completely agree. You have to have some commitment to sing this song. You start out all excited, and then you just lose steam around seven swans a swimming. It is the "99 Bottles of Coke on the Wall" of Christmas songs.

5. O Holy Night- Calm down! Calm down! I know it's strange to dislike this song, but you must understand. I have an alto voice and this song is definitely a song for sopranos. I dislike it purely out of bitterness. Someday I'll hit that note, "O night diviiIiiiIiiIiiiIiiiIiiiIiiIine!" Someday...

Blessing #13- Chickfila [and a Giveaway!}

We are up to Blessing #13. Normally 13 is seen as an unlucky number, but it is going to be a lucky number for one of you! I will tell you all about that at the end though.

If you've been looking at my Project Life pictures, you can obviously tell that I love Chickfila. So today, I will calculate them as a blessing and tell you why I love them so.

I love Chickfila for so many reasons. They have the most unique fast food fries. They are closed on Sundays. (Honestly, I love and hate this all at the same time. It all depends on how hungry I am on Sunday.) They have fantastic service. They really are a little taste of home for me up here.

However, the main reason I love Chickfila is their work with children in the foster system. When I was in the eighth grade, I met Truett Cathy as he took a kid in my class to his first day of school. The child he was with lived in a WinShape home. Mr. Cathy introduced him to everyone in our class and gave us all coupons for free Chickfila sandwiches. Even as a teenager, I was impressed by Mr. Cathy taking time to do that. Now as an adult, I enjoy supporting a business that seeks to help the helpless. If you want to learn more about WinShape homes just click here.

Okay, so now that I'm done with my Chickfila love fest, let me explain why #13 is lucky.
One of my favorite things about blogs is giveaways. I have won a couple things from different blogs, and I love the excitement of winning. As a part of our Lankford family Christmas project, (I'll post about that later) we decided to giveaway a $10 Chickfila gift card to someone. You can win it! You can have up to three entries. Make sure you leave a different comment for each entry. Here's how:

Entry 1: To enter leave a comment telling me why you love Chickfila.

You can also have two additional entries just make sure you leave a separate comment for each entry.

Entry 2: Become a follower of Calculating Blessings. If you already are a follower that counts too.

Entry 3: "Like" Calculating Blessings on Facebook. If you already "like" Calculating Blessings (all two of you) that counts too. The facebook page isn't much now, but I want to do more with it. I want to make it more interactive than the blog. Where everyone can Calculate a blessing.

The contest ends on Sunday night at 12:00 AM. I'll pick a winner using random.org and announce it on the blog on Monday! Good Luck!

***Note: Because I just started the blog many of my readers are my family members, so there is a good chance the winner may be a family member of mine. The only family member I've banned from entering is Shad. (Yes, he wanted to enter.) He loves contests, but he has to sit this one out.

Sorry Shad. We'll go to Chickfila this weekend.
