Last week, the posts focused on introducing myself, and this week, I can't wait to get down into the nitty gritty of Goodwill style.
Well actually, let me correct that. You may think I am going to give you tips about how to Goodwill, and eventually, I will. However, there are some things that we need to cover first.
Maybe you are like me and are fashionably challenged or maybe you have had a turning point and you are deciding to take care of yourself and dress better. If that is you, it is hard to know where to start.
Maybe you are excited and you just want to head to Goodwill right now. Be careful! One of the big complaints people tell me about Goodwill is that they walk in and they are so overwhelmed.
Goodwill has every color of the rainbow of shirts, pants, and skirts, and every piece in the store is different. Seriously, if you don't know what you style is, you might freak out.
It's a good idea to know your style before you ever walk into a Goodwill.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself when you are trying to find your style....
What is my favorite piece that I wear?
What is it that makes me like that piece? the cut? the color? the pattern? the brand?
What colors do I like best on myself the colors that I am always drawn to?
Do I like staying on trend or prefer the timeless classics?
Do I prefer to wear lots of black and grey tones or more brown tones?
Who do I know that dresses like I want to dress?
What is it about their style that I like? specific pieces or overall look?
The questions may sound simple, but they help us focus what we want and what is stylish to us.
Generally, florals and multi-colored patterns are not my favorite. For some reason, simple colors are prettier to my eye (right now.) However, I have a friend that loves patterns and she looks fantastic in them. One is not better than the other, you just have to know what works for you and makes you feel the most confident.
As you are finding your personal style the most important thing to do is to throw out your, "I can'ts."
"I like colored pants, but I can't wear them because my thighs are big."
"I like animal prints, but I can't be that daring."
"I like that striped shirt, but I can't wear it. Everyone says horizontal stripes make you look bigger."
No!!!! This is your chance to start over with a clean slate. If you like a trend or style, be brave! Try it! You just might surprise yourself.
When I first saw colored pants, I thought I might be a little to old for them, but now colored pants are my favorite!
If you genuinely don't like a trend or style, then don't wear it, but don't tell yourself that you can't wear something based on fear or other people's opinions.
Knowing your personal style gives you a guide allows you to handle all the choices when you walk into a Goodwill.
I'd love to hear from you. How would you define your style?

I love solids too, but also classic prints and styles. As I have been purging through my wardrobe, I'm discovering that I have a lot of red and black. I don't fall into the trendy crowd either, I like things that will last for more than just one or two seasons.
